Pilot Pen Tennis Moves from Connecticut to Winston-Salem

John Isner in Championship Game at First Winston-Salem OpenThe Pilot Pen ATP tournament taking place a week before the U.S. Open as the final entry prior to the Grand Slam in the U.S. Open Series is coming to Winston-Salem!! This tournament used to be the favorite of James Blake because he hailed from New Haven, CT.

Star Tennis Players Come to Winston

While it doesn't draw the top players that a Grand Slam or Masters Series tournament might, this particular ATP tournament hosted quite a few stars prior to its move to Winston, including Andre Agassi, Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Magnus Norman, Lleyton Hewitt, James Blake, Tommy Haas, Fernando Verdasco and Marin Cilic.

When Will the Tournament Take Place?

Look for some exciting tennis action to begin next August 21-27, 2011!

Where Will They Play?

Thanks to local car dealership owner Don Flow (the same guy that brought us Davis Cup three times in the last ten years), enough funding has been raised to build a new facility for the ATP tournament on the Wake Forest University campus. There will be a center court, seating at least 3,500 fans, along with two show courts seating a minimum of 1,500 fans, for a total attendance capacity of 6,500. The rest of the year the Wake Forest men's and women's tennis teams will play on these courts, which should also add some excitement to the college tennis events.

Sponsors so far include Flow, HBI (Hanes), and BB&T. No title sponsor has been announced as of yet.

Looking forward to it.

How exciting! Seating for 6,500 fans is wonderful. I hope to be in one of those seats enjoying the action.
