Restaurants with Gluten-Free Menus

A gluten-free (often abbreviated as “GF”) diet is not an easy one, especially when dining out. Thankfully, awareness and education is growing among chefs regarding gluten allergies and there are more dining options than ever before. Here in Winston-Salem there are chain restaurants that offer gluten-free options, as well as a few locally owned restaurants with knowledgeable chefs. A few even serve gluten free beer!

As always, be sure to ask lots of questions of wait staff, and even better, request to speak to the chef and/or manager about menu items, as there are less obvious sources of gluten like soy sauce, malted barley and the danger of cross contamination of which wait staff may not be aware.

Here is a list of restaurants with gluten free menus as well as a few gluten free friendly spots and bakeries in the area.

Restaurants with Gluten-Free Menus in Winston-Salem (Alphabetical Listing)

Bonefish Grill

300 South Stratford Rd.
Winston-Salem, NC (Stratford Rd/Thruway Shopping Ctr)

This chain restaurant has a wide selection of gluten-free seafood entrees served with a choice of mango salsa, chimichurri or lemon butter sauces, as well as steak and chicken. The sweetest gluten-free items on the menu? Their macadamia nut brownie and créme Brulée!

Brixx Wood Fired Pizza

1295 Creekshire Way (off Hanes Mall Blvd)
Winston-Salem, NC  (Hanes Mall area)

Brixx is a pizza chain, but they make their gluten-free crust in its own container to avoid cross-contamination. Gluten-free crust costs an extra $2. Brixx is my favorite gluten-free restaurant crust so far; not flat and crispy like most. Notes: Wait staff automatically brings out dough for kids to shape and then they bake it and return it for them to eat while they wait. This dough is NOT gluten-free, so turn it down. Brixx also offers vegan cheese for those who are also allergic to dairy.

Carrabbas Italian Grill

587 S. Stratford Rd.
Winston-Salem, NC (Stratford Rd. area)

Note: Carrabbas does not have a separate gluten-free grill, for chicken, shrimp and steaks, request they be prepared without their grill baste.

Chili’s Grill & Bar

348 E. Hanes Mill Rd, (North Winston-Salem, University area)
Winston-Salem, NC

100 Stratford Common Ct. (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC

Note: Chili’s is a national chain and has a shared fryer, so fried items are not gluten-free.

Chipotle Mexican Grill

128 Hanes Mall Circle (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC

Chipotle is a national chain known for their fresh ingredients. Choose their corn tortillas or chips rather than flour tortillas.

Coffee Park/Krankies Airstream

1208 Reynolda Rd
Winston-Salem, NC

This fun Krankies Airstream offers drive-up service on both sides and their friendly baristas serve up the tastiest cup in town as well as teas, sandwiches and baked goods from Camino Bakery. Take a seat at Coffee Park just behind the Krankies Airstream, where you’ll find fresh local baked goods to go with that cuppa! Coffee Park offers Kalo

Foods (the only certified GF NC bakery) baked GF breads and individually wrapped GF brownies as well as GF baking mixes, waffle/pancake mixes. Tip: Bring your own commuter mug to get a regular coffee for only $1 at the ‘Stream.

Domino’s Pizza

450 Knollwood St (Stratford Rd area)

7821 North Point Blvd (University/Polo/Oldtown area)

4890 Country Club Rd (Country Club Rd/Peacehaven area)

Domino’s recently introduced a gluten-free crust that is thin and crispy and the public has responded well.

Donatos Pizza

5312 Robinhood Village
Winston-Salem, NC

6246 Towne Center Dr.
Clemmons, NC

Donatos calls their’s a “No Dough Pizza”. They are not joking. Instead of a crust, they crumble a small “soy protein crisp” that has the look and texture of a crumbled rice cake, that they sprinkle thinly over the pan before pouring the pizza sauce and toppings on top. This was very disappointing.

Firebirds Wood Fired Grill

1215 Creekshire Way
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Firebirds is an upscale North Carolina chain, based in Charlotte, NC. We especially love the Chile-rubbed Delmonico and the baby back ribs.

Five Guys

3273 Robinhood Rd
Winston-Salem, NC

3792 Creekshire Ct
Winston-Salem, NC

Although Five Guys does not have a dedicated gluten free menu, everything is gluten free except the buns. They will prepare a burger in a lettuce wrap. The best thing is that their awesome fries are gluten free, since that is the only item they fry!

Five Points

109 S. Stratford Rd.
Winston-Salem, NC 27104
(336) 448-0970

1263 Creekshire Way (Hanes Mall Blvd area)
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Frogurt offers a long list of gluten free frozen yogurts as well as toppings.

Honky Tonk Smokehouse

145 Jonestown Road
Winston-Salem, NC 27104

All of their meats and many of their sides are gluten-free.

Jason’s Deli

1005 Hanes Mall Blvd (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Note: When a customer orders from the gluten-free menu, only the manager is allowed to prepare it.

The Loop Pizza Grill

320 S. Stratford Rd (Thruway Shopping Center)
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

While there are no gluten free pizza crust offerings at The Loop, they do offer gluten free chicken, tuna and salmon entrees, as well as soups and salads. We love their grilled chicken, cranberry, walnut goat cheese salad!

Lone Star Steakhouse

1110 Creekshire Way (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Longhorn Steakhouse

955 Hanes Mall Blvd (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem 27103

Mary’s Gourmet Diner (formerly Breakfast of Course, Mary’s of Course)

723 Trade St. (Downtown Arts District)
Winston-Salem, NC

A funky, family-owned, farm-to-table favorite and winner of Smitty’s Notes Best of Winston-Salem in several categories year after year, Mary’s Gourmet Diner often serves gluten-free breads from Three Sisters Bakery for toast, sandwiches and french toast, but call ahead to be sure they’re not out! To try: their famous eggs benedict on Three Sisters gluten-free toast or gluten-free Cinnamon Swirl French Toast when available.

McAlister’s Deli

368 East Hanes Mill Rd (University area)

Although no gluten-free bread options are offered, there are soups, salads and baked potatoes and sandwiches can be served in lettuce wrap. Be sure to ask for the manager, as not all staff are knowledgeable about the allergen menu.

Mellow Mushroom

314 W. Fourth St. (Downtown)
Winston-Salem, NC

Mellow Mushroom offers a thin, crispy gluten-free pizza crust — only in size medium, 12″, at $12; and some gluten free toppings, which cost extra.  Note: their chicken is not gluten-free. Mellow Mushroom also offers gluten-free beer!

New Town Bistro – Closed Summer 2015

420 Jonestown Rd. (Jonestown Rd/Peacehaven area)
Winston-Salem, NC 27104

This locally owned upscale restaurant has a dedicated gluten-free menu. Try the blue cornmeal crusted catfish!

Noble’s Grille

380 Knollwood St.
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Noble’s Grille is a local, fine dining, farm-to-table restaurant. While it does not have a dedicated gluten-free menu, the chef does a fantastic job working around food allergies. Our family has both gluten and dairy allergies. The chef asked us to choose a fish or seafood entree and he would prepare something specifically for us. Oftentimes, we receive a bland slab of fish or meat without even salt or pepper, but the chef at Noble’s does a wonderful job preparing a sauce for our fish on the spot that was gluten-free.

Olive Garden

170 Hanes Mall Circle (Hanes Mall lot)
Winston-Salem, NC

Outback Steakhouse

505 Highland Oaks Dr. (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC

Be sure to request that any vegetables you order are not seasoned. Love the gluten-free brownie!

River Birch Lodge

3324 Robinhood Rd
Winston-Salem, NC

Known for being a pioneer in gluten-free offerings in Winston-Salem, River Birch Lodge has a dedicated gluten-free menu, and gluten-free bread that can be served with any sandwich on their full menu, however, they do not have hamburger buns or sub rolls, only small gluten free sandwich bread, which is disappointing on a big burger.

Romano’s Macaroni Grill

1915 Hampton Inn Ct. (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

Romano’s Macaroni Grill offers an allergen table, which patrons must search through to see if their allergens are checked or not for each entree. This is less desirable than a dedicated gluten free menu, but kudos to them for actually offering gluten-free pasta (although all penne), unlike other Italian chains!

Ruby Tuesday

3320 Silas Creek Pkwy (inside Hanes Mall)
Winston-Salem, NC 27103

6412 Sessions Ct.
Clemmons, NC 27012

Three Sisters Artisan Bakery

433 N. Main St.
Mocksville, NC

Three Sisters Artisan Bakery offers gluten free breads and desserts such as their lemony almond macaroons, which are available at several Winston-Salem locations, including Whole Foods, Cobblestone Farmers Market, Old Salem Cobblestone Farmers Market, Piedmont Triad Farmers Market, Reynolda Village Farmers Market, WFUBMC Farmers Market and sometimes Reynolda Farm Market and Let it Grow Produce and sweet treats at a/perture cinema. They supply gluten-free breads to local restaurants such as Breakfast of Course (B.O.C.) and The Screaming Rooster.

Village Tavern

102 Reynolda Village
Winston-Salem, NC

2000 Griffith Rd (Hanes Mall area)
Winston-Salem, NC

Washington Perk

228 W. Acadia
Winston-Salem (Washington Park area)

Downtown Perk

301 W Fourth St
Downtown Winston-Salem

The original Washington Perk location is a favorite hangout, coffee and tea bar, deli and grocery in the Washington Park neighborhood just outside of Downtown Winston-Salem that offers mostly organic groceries, local organic meats and an extensive wine selection. This is one of the few, if not the only area deli that offers gluten-free bread. Great deck for enjoying the outdoors. Their second location downtown, “Downtown Perk” offers groceries with local selections, deli and coffee. Gluten free bread available.
