A gluten-free (often abbreviated as “GF”) diet is not an easy one, especially when dining out. Thankfully, awareness and education is growing among chefs regarding gluten allergies and there are more dining options than ever before. Here in Winston-Salem there are chain restaurants that offer gluten-free options, as well as a few locally owned restaurants with knowledgeable chefs. A few even serve gluten free beer!
As always, be sure to ask lots of questions of wait staff, and even better, request to speak to the chef and/or manager about menu items, as there are less obvious sources of gluten like soy sauce, malted barley and the danger of cross contamination of which wait staff may not be aware.

Brixx is a pizza chain, but they make their gluten-free crust in its own container to avoid cross-contamination. Gluten-free crust costs an extra $2. Brixx is my favorite gluten-free restaurant crust so far; not flat and crispy like most. Notes: Wait staff automatically brings out dough for kids to shape and then they bake it and return it for them to eat while they wait. This dough is NOT gluten-free, so turn it down. Brixx also offers vegan cheese for those who are also allergic to dairy.

Donatos calls their’s a “No Dough Pizza”. They are not joking. Instead of a crust, they crumble a small “soy protein crisp” that has the look and texture of a crumbled rice cake, that they sprinkle thinly over the pan before pouring the pizza sauce and toppings on top. This was very disappointing.

Noble’s Grille is a local, fine dining, farm-to-table restaurant. While it does not have a dedicated gluten-free menu, the chef does a fantastic job working around food allergies. Our family has both gluten and dairy allergies. The chef asked us to choose a fish or seafood entree and he would prepare something specifically for us. Oftentimes, we receive a bland slab of fish or meat without even salt or pepper, but the chef at Noble’s does a wonderful job preparing a sauce for our fish on the spot that was gluten-free.

Known for being a pioneer in gluten-free offerings in Winston-Salem, River Birch Lodge has a dedicated gluten-free menu, and gluten-free bread that can be served with any sandwich on their full menu, however, they do not have hamburger buns or sub rolls, only small gluten free sandwich bread, which is disappointing on a big burger.

The original Washington Perk location is a favorite hangout, coffee and tea bar, deli and grocery in the Washington Park neighborhood just outside of Downtown Winston-Salem that offers mostly organic groceries, local organic meats and an extensive wine selection. This is one of the few, if not the only area deli that offers gluten-free bread. Great deck for enjoying the outdoors. Their second location downtown, “Downtown Perk” offers groceries with local selections, deli and coffee. Gluten free bread available.
