What Is The Difference Between Antiques, Collectibles, And Vintage?

Let’s clear one thing up before we start treasure hunting, because not everything old is technically an antique! Whether you’re strolling through one of Winston-Salem’s best antique stores or eyeing a quirky find at a flea market, knowing the gear and the lingo can help you shop smarter and spot true value.

  • Antiques – Pieces that are at least 100 years old are considered antiques. Their value is determined by rarity, demand, and condition. Think Victorian-era furniture or early 1900s ceramics.
  • Vintage – Items over 20 years old from a specific era are referred to as vintage. Vintage pieces evoke feelings of nostalgia and can be collectible, such as a gorgeous mid-century lamp or a 1970s concert tee.
  • Collectible – Items that are worth more than they originally sold for are collectibles. Its value is based less on age and more on condition, rarity, and popularity. Think baseball cards, retro toys, or Depression glass.

Understanding the difference can make all the difference, especially when you’re browsing Winston-Salem antique shops and want to tell a treasure from a trendy throwback.

3. Lost In Time Antique Mall

Lost In Time is a large space with numerous booths and a little bit of everything. You will find treasures that are antique, vintage, collectible, and one-of-a-kind. Though there is much to see, it is all neatly arranged, and vendors are pleasant and helpful. Items include furniture, lamps, glassware, pottery, artwork, toys, signs, jewelry, decor, vintage clothing, and so much more. Reviews are excellent. If you’re a collector, this is a must-see shop.

I have visited Lost In Time, and it is a perfect name for this antique mall. I spent a couple of hours roaming through the aisles. There are so many items to see. Some of the vendor’s areas were not open, which was disappointing, but it was a weekday. I am sure they are all open on weekends. Those that were open were extremely cordial, and I enjoyed looking at all they offered. There is a good variety of unique and collectible wares.

Winston-Salem Treasure Hunt Tip

You never know what you’ll stumble across in a Winston-Salem antique shop. Case in point: a woman once scored a vintage vase for just $3.99, only to discover it was a 1940s designer piece by a renowned Italian architect, valued at over $100,000. What is the moral of the story? In Winston-Salem, even a dusty shelf can hide a six-figure surprise. Keep your eyes (and mind) open because real treasures are out there!

Kathy Solarino

I am originally from New Jersey but now call Winston-Salem home. I am blessed with 3 sons, their wives, and five grandchildren. My husband is deceased, but I gained his two sons, their wives, and four additional grandchildren. I fell in love with Winston-Salem because of the beautiful area, the arts, the music, and the people. It's a city with a heart and soul.
