Skiing is a great winter sport. It provides excellent exercise, stimulates your endorphins, connects you to nature, is personally challenging, and is a social experience. Rather than dreading winter months, skiers look forward to getting out on the snowy slopes and taking runs. Having the correct equipment is an essential part of enjoying the sport. A visit to one of Winston-Salem’s ski shops and speaking to the knowledgeable staff can help you find everything you need. You can find their information here.

What To Wear Skiing Or Snowboarding

It is essential to dress appropriately when you are out on the slopes. Being over- or underdressed can be very uncomfortable and ruin your day. Layering is the rule to keep warm but not too warm when skiing or snowboarding. Below is a list of the right clothes to wear, according to The Ski Source.

  • Moisture-Wicking Ski Socks – long enough to be above your boot line. Do not wear thick socks or multiple pairs.
  • Base Layer (long underwear) – moisture-wicking and fit snug to your body. Tops should tuck in, and a plus if they have thumb holes.
  • Mid Layer – provides most of your warmth, so the weight of the layer depends on the temperature – light fleece or heavier fleece.
  • Outer Layer or Ski Jacket – must be waterproof, windproof, and breathable, with ample pockets and a loose fit to allow layering.
  • Ski or Snowboard Pants – must be waterproof, windproof, and should have pockets. You don’t need a mid-layer on your legs.
  • Gloves or Mittens – essential for keeping hands warm. Glove liners can help, too. Bring two pairs if your hands get sweaty.
  • Neck Gaiter – keeps your face and neck warm and protected from windchill. Pull it over your nose and mouth on extra cold days.
  • Helmet – not only protects your head in a collision but keeps your head warm as well.
  • Snow Goggles – worn over your helmet so you can see clearly, protect your eyes from harmful rays, and keep wind out of your eyes.

Kathy Solarino

I am originally from New Jersey but now call Winston-Salem home. I am blessed with 3 sons, their wives, and five grandchildren. My husband is deceased, but I gained his two sons, their wives, and four additional grandchildren. I fell in love with Winston-Salem because of the beautiful area, the arts, the music, and the people. It's a city with a heart and soul.
