What Is an Escape Room?

An escape room is a live-action, team-based game where players solve puzzles, uncover clues, and complete challenges within a themed environment, usually within 60 minutes. Each room follows a unique storyline, such as defusing a bomb, escaping a haunted mansion, or cracking a cold case. With your group “locked in” (figuratively), the goal is to collaborate and escape before time runs out.

These immersive games challenge players to test their logic, communication, and teamwork skills. Escape rooms are popular for birthday parties, date nights, corporate events, and family outings because they’re interactive, adrenaline-charged, and different every time you go.

4 Reasons Escape Rooms Are Great for Team Building

Escape rooms are one of the most effective team-building experiences, and for good reason:

  1. Collaboration is essential: Success requires every player to communicate, share insights, and rely on each other’s strengths.
  2. Leadership emerges naturally: Without assigned roles, groups self-organize, allowing new leaders and team dynamics to flourish.
  3. Problem-solving under pressure: The countdown clock creates urgency, encouraging real-time decision-making and strategic thinking.
  4. Shared experiences: Whether teams escape or not, the experience builds camaraderie, trust, and plenty of conversation afterward.

Many local escape room venues offer special rates or custom packages for corporate events and professional groups, making them a wise choice for building strong, connected teams outside the office.

Research Supports Escape Rooms for Team-Building

A 2018 pilot study from McMaster and Thomas Jefferson Universities found that a commercial escape room helped participants practice:

  • Teamwork and communication
  • Task delegation and critical thinking
  • Adapting under time pressure

Following the activity, participants noted strong parallels with high-pressure clinical environments and said the game promoted leadership, collaboration, and trust, especially when combined with a structured debriefing session.

Kathy Solarino

I am originally from New Jersey but now call Winston-Salem home. I am blessed with 3 sons, their wives, and five grandchildren. My husband is deceased, but I gained his two sons, their wives, and four additional grandchildren. I fell in love with Winston-Salem because of the beautiful area, the arts, the music, and the people. It's a city with a heart and soul.
