New, you say? Brouwerij DuBois already has an established home here in Winston-Salem! While this is true, Brouwerij DuBois is unique in that it does not yet have its brewery up and running. Still several months away from brewing their beer on-site due to various delays over many months, they have still managed to operate a warm and welcoming taproom that has become a neighborhood favorite. We were curious about who they were and how they did that.

Where is Brouwerij DuBois?

Brouwerij DuBois is on the outskirts of town, on the west side of Winston-Salem, right by the Lewisville town line. It’s on Country Club Road on the corner of Meadowlark Drive and is hard to miss with its large black and white sign. It has a homey, covered front porch with rocking chairs and an outdoor patio with picnic tables, umbrellas, and lights at night, and there is usually a food truck in front. It is a dog- and kid-friendly place that is welcoming to everyone and a true community gathering place.

What Are They About?

Simply put, Brouwerij DuBois is about people coming together and having a fun time and good beer. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable, home style and country. A place that lends itself to friends meeting, people laughing, good conversation, and having a great time. It is open, with a large wide bar and a farmhouse feel. They have a couple of TVs where they show sports, but they are in no way a sports bar. There are twelve draft beer options and a bottle menu that will push guests to try new things. Also available are wine, canned seltzers, domestic and import, non-alcoholic beverages, and kids’ options, and they try to provide a Food Truck each day they are open. They host fun and exciting events or, as they call them, Shindigs, like Team Connection Night, Vinyl Night, Retro Game Night, and Paint Your Pet Night. In true community fashion, they have birthday nights to celebrate the month’s birthdays! You can find information about the Food Truck schedule and Shindigs on the Brouwerij DuBois Website.

What’s On Tap?

You will find a rotating selection of beers on tap, including North Carolina brews and beers from throughout the United States and abroad. Even though they have yet to brew their own beer on-site, that has not stopped owners Jordan DuBois and his girlfriend, Cassie Taylor, from bringing unique flavored craft beer to their taproom. In collaboration with friends from other breweries, Brouwerij DuBois has crafted a series of beers to delight the taste buds.

Why do breweries collaborate? There is camaraderie in the brewing industry and the host breweries are happy to support another local brewer. They also enjoy doing something outside the scope of what they ordinarily do, and sometimes, it is just fun to have a day working with your friends developing a new craft brew. They have worked with brewers like Incendiary Brewing, Little Brother Brewing, White Elephant Brewing Co, Gypsy Road Brewing Co, Heist Brewery, and Steel String Brewery. They occasionally carry these breweries’ beers on tap, some more than others. They have two new collaborated brews coming out. One was brewed with Heist, the other with Steel String, a sour beer and a lager. The lager should be ready this fall, and the sour, hopefully in a few months. “Sour beer tells you when it’s ready,” according to Jordan.

What Will Be Brewing At Brouwerij DuBois

The brewing at Brouwerij DuBois will hopefully begin before the end of this year. They will brew lagers, IPAs, dark beers, sours, and many more types, but they will specialize in Saisons. A refreshing beer with a dry finish and unique flavor combinations, it is their favorite beer to brew because so much can be done with it. It can be made thirst-quenching, high gravity, hoppy, with added herbs, spices, or fruit, or funked out and barrel-aged. There are many ways to create fun, new varieties, and you will find new versions on tap whenever you visit Bouwerij DuBois. They are sure once you taste one, you will develop a love for it too. I had the opportunity to taste a sour Saison while there, and it was amazing! Known as a table wine, it was crisp, effervescent, and refreshing. It will definitely be what I order when I return.

Here Are Just A Few Of The Craft Beers They Will Offer:

  • Little Martha – Saison: Dry, slightly peppery, and inviting; their favorite to brew and drink
  • Tu Me Manques – Saison: Clean and dry farmhouse ale with overripe fruit and vanilla notes; “I miss you” in French
  • Soulshine – IPA: Brewed to be juicy and bright but not too hefty; Big tropical and citrus hop aromas and flavors with a clean finish
  • Layla – Saison: Brewed with NC malts, jasmine rice, bright hops, and a healthy dose of lemongrass, then fermented clean
  • Reveur – Belgian Wit: Brewed with NC malts and a splash of hops, and fresh lime juice, lime zest, and juniper berries in the boil

They will also be brewing Max and Jo, a Saison, a refreshing medium-bodied ale named in honor of Jordan’s grandparents, and Acorn Black Lager, created to commemorate a beloved family cat. The grist includes black patent, chocolate malt, and roasted barley. It is a smooth, delicious, and enjoyable brew.

1st Annual Harvest Festival – November 17, 2024

Browerij DuBois will host its Inaugural Harvest Festival on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from noon to 8 p.m. The festival will feature a farmers market with vendors, makers, and farmers from 1pm to 5pm; Harvest Draft Brews—a uniquely seasonal tap list featuring a number of beers brewed with authentic agricultural ingredients—and Food Trucks. There will also be live music, a pumpkin pie eating contest, crafts for kids, and a s’mores station. See their Facebook page here for more information.

I am originally from New Jersey but now call Winston-Salem home. I am blessed with 3 sons, their wives, and five grandchildren. My husband is deceased, but I gained his two sons, their wives, and four additional grandchildren. I fell in love with Winston-Salem because of the beautiful area, the arts, the music, and the people. It's a city with a heart and soul.
