Crafter – a person who skillfully makes something with their hands. For some, crafting is a hobby; for others, it is an occupation; for all craftmakers, it is a satisfying creative experience. Whether you are making jewelry, sewing, knitting, scrapbooking, wreath-making, woodworking, or designing yard art, you are taking an idea and bringing it to life.

Below, we created a list of local craft stores in the Winston-Salem area. The large stores cater to all types of crafters, while the smaller ones are more specialized. If you are not already a crafter, look at the shops we found and see if something interests you. You may have a hidden artistic talent!

Upcoming Craft Fairs In Winston-Salem

There are two large Craft Fairs coming to Winston-Salem this Fall.

Southern Charm At The Farm – Saturday, September 28, 2024, 9am – 4pm, at Tanglewood Park, Main Entrance off Route US 158, Clemmons, NC. Hundreds of select artisans will display their handcrafted goods in booths at this fair. See their Facebook Page for a list of vendors. Southern Charm has fairs each spring and fall.

Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair – Saturday & Sunday, November 23 & 24, 2024 at the Benton Convention Center, 301 W 5th Street, Winston-Salem, NC. Hours are Saturday, 10am – 6pm, and Sunday, 12pm – 5pm. Over 100 skilled artisans and artists will showcase their handcrafted goods to visitors at the 61st annual Piedmont Craftsmen’s Fair. Live demonstrations of various craft techniques will also take place. See their Website for artist information and to purchase tickets.

Michael’s Arts & Crafts

Michael’s is the area’s last true large arts & crafts store since AC Moore closed. It carries supplies for making jewelry, paper quilling, embroidery, doll houses, woodworking, sewing, scrapbooking, paper flowers, and almost any craft or hobby you can imagine. They also carry seasonal decor, artificial flowers, cake decorating needs, craft kits, and fabric decorating items. Michael’s offers custom framing and online classes as well.

Hobby Lobby

Hobby Lobby has a wide variety of arts and craft items, including candle and soap making, clay and sculpting, leather craft supplies, craft paint, glass crafting, collecting, dollhouses and miniatures, jewelry, paper crafts, model kits, and numerous other craft and hobby items. They also carry children’s educational toys, crafts, activities, storage and organizational products, seasonal items, and home decor. They often have reduced prices on their collections. It is unlikely you will walk through the store and come out empty-handed.

Joann Fabric And Craft Store

Though some of Joann stores are closing, the Winston-Salem one is not affected and remains open and ready to serve crafters. Joann carries many types and styles of fabric, trims, and notions, of course, and everything you would expect to find at a quality fabric store for sewing. They also carry a wide range of craft items, including fabric crafting supplies, florals, paper crafts, yarn, and needle arts, baking items, cake decorating supplies, kids’ craft kits, candy-making items, and craft machines. In addition, they sell storage and organizational products, planners, seasonal items, and home decor.

Enchanted Cottage

Enchanted Cottage is the largest stamping, scrapbooking, and papercrafts store in the Southeast. It carries over 1,000 specialty papers and stamps to make art, cards, scrapbooks, and more. It also has tools and instructions for die cutting, heat embossing, Chrome Precision Plating, and more. The demo counter always has something happening on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm, and they offer classes, too. This is a wonderful shop to look around in and let your imagination soar.

Paracord 1961

Paracord 1961 is a shop for a unique hobby using parachute cords, or paracords as it is now known. They carry a large selection of Atwood paracord in a variety of colors and tints and stock a complete line of buckles and hardware. They have a myriad of charms for paracord bracelets, including military, NFL, medical alert, patriotic, religious, survivor, and more. They also sell one or two-cord survival bracelets. Aside from bracelets, crafts made from paracord include key chains, knife grips, dog collars or leashes, watchbands, and hammock chairs.

Sewingly Yours

Sewingly Yours is a multi-generational fabric shop that ranks high in quality and customer service. The store carries over 2000 bolts of fabric, including designer fabrics, collections, batiks, Kimberbell designs, Grunge, and seasonal patterns. They have a variety of quilting supplies, notions, kits, and patterns and carry a wide range of sewing, embroidery, and quilting machines. An onsite machine technician who services all brands is also available. Classes such as Beginning Sewing, Log Cabin Quilt Class, Rope Bowl with Appliqued Bird, and Sit and Sew with Friends are offered regularly.

Studio 2 Bead Shop

Studio 2 Bead Shop is another specialty arts and crafts store for those who enjoy making jewelry or other projects using beads. The store is a full-service bead shop and artist studio offering a vast selection of all types of beads and many rare finds, including mother of pearl, seed beads, vintage beads, crystals, gemstones, African trade beads, multi-hole beads, and so much more. The service, advice, and help you receive at the shop are invaluable. You can make wearable art like earrings, bracelets, necklaces, pendants, pins, and rings. They offer classes, too. Stop in, look around, and see what you want to create!

Time To Stitch

Time To Stitch is a needlepoint shop carrying a wide variety of hand-painted canvases, beautiful threads, and accessories. They have many custom and designer canvases, different mesh counts and themes, and stitch guides. The shop carries numerous threads, including Bella Lusso, Colonial Persian Wool, DMC #8 Perle, DMC Floss, Gloriana Silk Floss, Krenick, Planet Earth, Straw Silk, The Caron Collection, Variegated, Vineyard Silk, and so much more. Many accessories include bead tools, counting pins, fobs, frame stands, laying tools, project bags, scroll frames, stretcher bars, and tools. Needlepoint kits are also available. Time To Stitch offers needlepoint classes for beginners, as well. It is a great shop to visit if you are doing needlepoint or looking for a new hobby.

Village Fabric Shop

Village Fabric Shop is a community-minded fabric shop dedicated to the preservation and practice of textile and craft traditions, carrying only high-quality, environmentally responsible quilting and apparel fabrics, notions, tools, kits, patterns, and natural dyes. They offer a wide range of fabrics, including garment fabrics, quilting cottons, silks, wool, sustainable, cotton, lawn, voile, viscose, modal, bamboo, linens, hemps, knits, stretch, denim, denim, corduroy, and canvas. A full range of notions are available: shears, thread, trim, tools, and other items needed for the crafts, and patterns for garments, accessories, and quilts. They also sell kits for cross stitch, embroidery, sewing, and needle felting. Classes are offered regularly, and they have classes for children, too. Customer service is excellent and helpful. Village Fabric Shop also has a Reuse Shop, which accepts quality fabric and craft items to sell for reuse. It is their effort to be ecologically responsible and keep scrap from going to the landfill. Artists And Craftspeople In Winston-Salem

Winston Salem is the City of Arts and Innovation, and our downtown has an Arts District brimming with the creative work of local artists and craftspeople. A day of visiting the art galleries in and around downtown will not only delight you but get your creative juices flowing. An arts and crafts hobby could be the relaxing, satisfying experience you have been looking for. While in the city, stop at one of our downtown restaurants for lunch. Make it a special day trip!
