Hoots Beer Co. (formerly Hoots Roller Bar) was the second craft brewery in WSNC and a hidden gem located at the end of Mill Works Street. You entered through the outdoor seating area lit with tiny lights. It was dim inside, but the atmosphere was comfortable and welcoming. A pinball machine lit up the corner. There were booths and a bar. Hoots was a place where you wanted to meet, have a beer, and relax. It was a neighborhood bar where everyone was welcome.
What Did They Brew
Hoots opened its doors in 2013 as a developing brewery and, at its height, had six to nine of its own craft brews on tap at any given time. They also served select wines and a full bar for cocktails.
Popular Brews
Some of their more popular beers included Grasshopper IPA and Helles Lager.

Take Their Craft Brews Home
One feature Hoots offered was the ability to take your favorite craft brew home and enjoy it. They would fill 22-ounce cans or six-packs with the beer of your choice and seal them, allowing you to purchase them to go.
The Unique West End Mill Works
The unique building that housed Hoots is West End Mill Works, once part of the Hoots Roller Mill Company, a former flour mill. It is from that Hoots Brewing took its name. The building is now a co-op of businesses that includes
- Sutler’s Spirit Co., a distillery of fine gin proud of its heritage recipes, hand-made by NC natives, a homage to its hometown of Winston-Salem
- The Porch Kitchen and Cantina serving authentic Tex-Mex, Margaritas, Tacos, Burritos, and more
- Dabble Art Bar: Order an activity from the menu and unleash your creativity, allowing it to flow, and enjoy the experience. Workshops are available, and visit their fantastic gift shop
- Oasis at The Mill is a space where you can find exquisite teas from around the world, a tea bar, unique gifts, and holistic wellness and self-care services. It regularly offers massage and salt therapy, but also yoga, sound journeys, tea rituals, and more as part of its calendar of events.
