Personally, I am a huge Thai food fan. Ever since my backpacking trip through the country in 2001 I’ve been hooked on their tasty cuisine, with a particular propensity for curries. When I first moved to Winston in 2004 I immediately went on the search for good Thai food. The best (and most affordable at the time) was Downtown Thai. I’m not saying it’s not the best anymore (it’s definitely not the most affordable anymore), but you’ve got a lot more options now.

Cha Da Thai

Cha Da Thai, in our opinion, has one of the nicest decors of any Thai restaurant in town.

  • 420 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem (Jonestown)
  • 336-659-8466
  • Hours
    • Mon – Fri (11am – 3pm; 5pm – 10pm)
    • Sat (5pm – 10pm)
    • Sun (11:30am – 10pm)

Good selection and wonderful food with offerings far afield from pad thai. Authentic decor, although it is in a strip mall. Service is typically outstanding without being obtrusive.

Thai Sawatdee (Inside Harris Teeter)

  • 2281 Cloverdale Ave., Winston-Salem (Ardmore/Miller Street/WFUBMC)
  • 336-725-1332

This is our favorite take-out Thai restaurant, bar-none. The curries are unbeatable, and everything is freshly made with Harris Teeter produce.

  • 3064 Healy Drive, Winston-Salem (Stratford/Olde Vineyard area)
  • 336-760-4455

Thai Sawatdee’s second location offers a fully featured dine-in restaurant experience. Same great Thai food, and you’ll rarely have to wait for your order. Each dish is prepared with generous servings and spiciness to order. We love the green curry chicken.

Downtown Thai & Pho

  • 219 W. Fourth St., Winston-Salem (Downtown)
  • 336-777-1422
  • Hours
    • Mon – Thurs (11am – 2pm; 5pm – 9:30pm)
    • Fri (5pm – 9:30pm)
    • Sat (1pm – 10pm)
    • Sun (Closed)

This was one of the original Thai restaurants in downtown Winston-Salem after downtown’s revival in the late 2000’s. Sawatdee Thai is an offspring (employee turned owner) of this Thai staple. The downtown Thai menu offering is more comprehensive, with sushi and pho both on offer, but for overall food quality, especially the curries, we prefer Sawatdee Thai.
